PE
PE
At St Peter Chanel, we want every child to discover the joy of being active. Our PE curriculum gives children the skills, confidence and habits they need to enjoy sport throughout their lives — whether that’s scoring goals on a Saturday morning, dancing in their bedroom, climbing a tree in the park, or simply running about with friends in the playground.
Every child takes part in two hours of PE each week, led by their class teacher and, on many occasions, alongside specialist external providers who bring expert coaching into school.
A broad and balanced PE curriculum
Across their time at our school, children take part in five strands of physical education: Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics, and Outdoor & Adventure. We follow the highly-regarded Val Sabin scheme of work, which supports our teachers in delivering high-quality, progressive PE lessons week after week.
Children build a wide range of skills — from balancing and rolling in Reception gymnastics, through to complex passing, marking and tactical play in Year 6 invasion games. Dance lessons let children express ideas and stories through movement, while Outdoor & Adventure sessions develop teamwork, problem-solving and map-reading.
Specialist coaching
We are proud to bring expert coaches into school to enhance the quality of our PE provision:
• Tennis is delivered by professional coaches from David Lloyd, giving children a proper grounding in a sport they can play for life.
• Swimming lessons take place at Sidcup Leisure Centre, with qualified instructors helping children become confident, water-safe swimmers in line with the National Curriculum.
• Karate is also offered as part of our wider sporting provision, helping children develop discipline, focus and self-confidence.
After-school sports clubs
Beyond timetabled lessons, children are invited to take part in a range of after-school sports clubs. These give children the chance to try new sports, build on what they’ve learned in PE lessons, and enjoy being active with their friends. Details of current clubs are shared with parents each term.
Progression across the school
Our PE journey is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6:
• In EYFS and Key Stage 1, children focus on fundamental movement skills — travelling, balancing, throwing, catching, kicking and dancing — and learn to follow rules, take turns and play safely with others.
• In Key Stage 2, lessons build into team games, athletics events, gymnastic sequences and choreographed dance pieces. Children develop tactical understanding, fitness and the ability to evaluate and improve their own performance.
By the time they leave us in Year 6, our children are competent, confident young athletes who understand why physical activity matters — for their bodies, their minds and their wellbeing.
More than just lessons
PE at St Peter Chanel is about more than ticking off skills. We want children to feel proud of what their bodies can do, to support their teammates, to handle winning and losing with grace, and to develop a lifelong love of being active. Through our PE curriculum, we live out our school mission to inspire, challenge and empower every child.
